"Help, I'm Addicted to My Anti-Addiction Pill!"

I find it absolutely amazing in our medicate happy, responsibility free, therapeutic culture, that there is now a new pill that promises freedom from addiction. The Associated Press report includes these interesting statements about the new drug.

A single pill appears to hold promise in curbing the urges to both smoke and drink, according to researchers trying to help people overcome addiction by targeting a pleasure center in the brain.

"Is this going to be a cure-all? No, not for smoking or alcoholism because both diseases are more complicated than a single target or single genetic issue," said Allan Collins, a professor of pharmacology at the University of Colorado who was not connected to the study.

Notice that drug addiction and alcoholism are described as diseases. But how can you quit a disease. Many people have quit using drugs or alcohol. They made a conscious choice to abuse these and they made a conscious choice to stop abusing these. Now I bet a lot of cancer patients would love to just quit their cancer, but they can't because it is a real disease.

I just wonder if people will get addicted to their anti-addiction pill. The only true cure to "addiction" (which is actually just sinful indulgence) is found in the Bible.

Ephesians 4:17-24 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.NASB95
